You’re Invited to a Progressive Dinner Party!!
Part 1 - Drinks & Appetizers
I’ve always thought it would be so much fun to take part in a progressive dinner, but have never had the opportunity. If you aren’t familiar with what a progressive dinner party is feel free to surf the net and check it out. So, how about doing a virtual one? This will be different because there will be no worries about traveling from home to home (you know there‘s detours and road construction about everywhere!); keeping cold food cold, and hot food hot, and the bubbly…bubbly; no scrambling around like a chicken with your head cut off; and last but not least, no kitchen cleanup. We can virtually enjoy recipes for good eats and drinks in the form of a chunky recipe page.
This is part 1 of 3 rounds for this progressive dinner party, meaning there will be more chunky swap rounds to follow for each dinner course in the near future. I’d love to have you participate in all courses as the swaps progress, but you certainly don’t have to. Here's a sneak peak, looking ahead at the future swaps...
Part 1 - drinks & appetizers - in progress
Part 2 - soups & salads
Part 3 - main entrees & desserts
For this swap course or round, you will create 2 chunky pages, one for a drink recipe and one for an appetizer recipe. I will also play as a participant in this swap, so please do not feel the need to create hostie gifts!! I’d rather you send two great pages than feel like you have to squeak a third one out :wideeyed:
http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/images/6762/medium/1_front.jpg http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/gallery/images/6762/medium/1_back.jpg
Please understand that drink recipes do not have to be alcoholic, they can also be punches, teas, or virgin varieties.
Hey now!!! Don’t forget that this is a swap and part of the fun is in the mystery of what will be served. Please feel free to PM me with any concerns around this and I will do my best to accommodate -- within reason, of course. When swapping out, my goal will be to provide a nice variety of artwork and recipes to each player the best I can.
Shipping info:
When you are ready to ship your work, PM me for my mailing information.
Please send your chunky pages in a padded/bubble wrap envelope. Without being excessive, be sure to package them safe and secure so that each chunky page is individually protected and labeled with your real name, username, and location - each page in its own sealable sandwich bag works well.
US participants- In your package, please include loose postage or well concealed cash in the amount equivalent to what was required to send it.
International participants- In your package, please include $4 US dollars if you can. If you can’t, I understand and I will cover the cost.
I will do my best to recycle your envelopes when sending returns, so please include a large label or equivalent size cut piece of paper with your address information clearly typed or written out to be adhered onto your original envelope. Keep in mind that the little return address labels will not work for this.
Rules:
1. Your pages must be 4x4 inches square and sturdy (cereal box, heavy watercolor paper, chipboard#. Please nothing flimsy:nah::no:! We want to be able to cherish and use these without them falling apart or getting bent and such.
2. Medium is artist’s choice as long as it’s not sticky, is fixed properly, and is durable. Think hand drawn, hand painted, collage, and mixed media.
3. Your pages must be lovely on both sides. One side should contain mostly images #consider this the front) and the back side should contain recipe details along with your username and whatever else you feel is important or have space to include. Please also consider listing the recipe source if possible. It would be ideal to create pages for recipes that you have made yourself and know that they are tried and true great recipes!
4. If you use glue, glue with care! Use something that will keep your beauties in tact, spread to the edges and clean up the globs, and be patient enough to give them time to dry. Like icing on a cake, good craftsmanship is important and always makes the difference in your work - let’s face it, we all notice it and we all appreciate it!
5. Embellishments- Yes! But not required! Keep in mind - Without knowing what I will get back for returns, I cannot guarantee that if you send all chunked up pages you will receive all chunked up pages in return. If you use embellishments, please keep the left ˝ inch margin of the front page free for bindery purposes and also consider the placement of your recipe details on the back as to not interfere with bindery as well.
6. Communication-
:unsure:You read all of this and have no idea what a chunky is and need more info- check this out: http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1294
:huh:You read all of this and are interested but still have questions- please feel free to pester me by way of PM.
:wideeyed:You signed up and now you need to drop out- no sweat, just let me know.
:policeman:Please allow enough time for your pages to make it to me by the deadline - late cards will be returned. Please ask if you have questions! To be fair and to meet everyone‘s expectations, pages sent that do not follow the guidelines will be returned.
Once you get your returns, remember to thank your fellow crafties and rock their socks with rep points. In addition, please leave me an I trader rating to confirm receipt of your returns as well as giving me much appreciated feedback - but take it easy on the noodle lashings!

Such a great idea, I will definately take the time as well, cuz I always wanted to do one of these dinners r/t and this just might give the arsenal to do it for reals some day... as well as share my beloved Lowcountry recipes!

I've updated my chunky example. I think I have finally settled on the appetizer recipe I will use, there are too many good choices. I will have to fix it first to see if it's worthy, it looks easy and doesn't take a lot of ingredients.

Holly, you are too good! Always throwing in a little surprise here and there... Love that crab and an opening treasure chest???
It's a little quiet here and I know better from those of you that signed up!! :P
How about any cooking disasters or tips? Favorite cooking items that they can't live without. I'd cry if I lost my favorite spatula - it's old and worn and I think it came from an old bbq kit. My mom gave it to me with a bunch of other kitchen stuff when I moved out on my own so that I would not have to buy a lot. It has a wooden handle that keeps getting looser by the day, but the spatula part is so super thin which I can't find anywhere nowadays. I wouldn't dream of baking cookies without it!
TF Balding
05-16-2012, 08:07 AM
Can't live without a few things in the kitchen... my pearing knife (also a gift from my Mama when da hubby& I started out), my iron skillet (ditto), & my hubby (cause really, he cooks much better than i do). :)
Pulled an all-nighter & got my chunkies done-woo-hoo!!! I'm pretty happy with em, too. :)

Yummy, I'm curious about those strawberry blossoms too. I like the color combos that you used on your chunkies.
Juli- I'd love to have one of those dutch ovens! Or any for that matter - I don't have one! But I know that brand is top of the line :cute:.

I tried this drink out 2 yrs ago at the Oregon Gathering in Hood River (at a hotel)..it is goooood!
I've experimented and made up my own recipe for it using "Rain" an Organic vodka with the flavor of Lavender and Lemonade.
The lemon slice on the card moves by a corner brad to go inside and outside the glass. LOL! On the opposite side of the lemon slice is a hint on how to make this drink into a VIRGIN!:P

05-17-2012, 02:28 AM
Got started on my recipes, one done!
I did have Le creuset pots and pans. Since a couple of years there is a new brand, La Cocotte from Staub (French) that is even better and unbelievable a little cheaper.
On the inside of the lit there are knobs, the damp does not get out of the oven, but glides of the knobs, back into the oven, so the food never get dried out! Lovely for stews. I made one yesterday, lam stew, french recipe: Navarin.

question~~
Are we all automatically signed up for the next progression or will that be a run and jump in?
Charlie Brown
05-20-2012, 08:31 AM
Nope, you are not. I didn't want anyone to feel committed to the other swap rounds. I honestly didn't know how this one would pan out - I'm pleasantly surprised. Hmmm...the good thing is that this is my last probationary swap so my next ones can have unlimited number of participants. I don't think I will get a huge crowd for these swaps so I think I might just leave it open and see what happens, this way everyone has a chance to play again -if they choose, and no one will miss out. What do you think? Feedback....feedback...what ya think?

Cool, that drink sounds delish! That's what my process is right now with my app chunky (building it around the chunk). I know what I want my danglies to be and I know I need to make them with sculpey which I've never used - and not sure If I should use it in my oven. Is it really safe? I'm currently on a scavenger hunt for a toaster oven - all in the name of chunky danglies...I must be going nuts!!

The stench of sculpey/fimo baking is kinda scary...
TF Balding
05-23-2012, 08:36 PM
I havent suffered any ill effects yet... but generally that smell is a warning that you've baked too long... heehee

I TOO stalk the stores for odd items and childrens toys, the thrift store is a great place to find one of a kind junk

Ask me about sculpy, fimo etc. I sculpted for years for a company with the stuff.
TF Balding
05-24-2012, 01:30 PM
Should we be afraid???
wildholly
05-24-2012, 09:12 PM
Just cautious... You don't always smell fumes.
Go exactly by directions and never bake it a second longer.
I don't use it any longer.
Paper Clay is a little better alternative (in my opinion).
TF Balding
05-24-2012, 10:01 PM

Just checking in on this thread and saw the sculpy convo -
I do have a question - should the oven (toaster) be one you have devoted to it? Or can you cook food in it after? I have some sculpy clay bricks I have never used because I am not sure about that...
I dabbled around with it a long time ago with a toaster oven we no longer used for food, but it eventually went kaput!
also, would magazine paper work for the paper clay?
wildholly
05-26-2012, 11:54 AM
I think the main reasoning behind using a toaster oven is to keep it from
your everyday cooking with food items.

Hi Neener! This round is closed to new players - I limited it to 12, it's my last probationary swap. The next rounds will be unlimited and you are more than welcome to jump in for the next course. How about hanging out with us and do two 1:1 trades with some of the group here for the drinks/appetizer part and then jump in with us for the next course?! I'd be interested in doing 1:1 with you for an additional drink or recipe card. Anyone else out there want to add to their book with a 1:1 trade with Neener? Neener, PMing you...

Anna, totally up to you - if you have a lot on your plate, no problemo I can move Neener in your spot. BUT If you want to stay in, Neener and I can move forward with doing 1:1 on drinks and maybe someone is willing to do 1:1 appetizers? Anna, I'll let you make the call.

Love it Jules! And completely agree... Liver is icky. My parents used to try and masquerade it as venison (which I SO wasn't fallin for) but in the end all it did was turn my sister against venison, too, lol... We are in our early 30s and I've just now convienced her they don't taste the same...
Neener
05-28-2012, 07:13 AM
I'm the same way about wild venison. I can smell it a mile off and I know if there is even 1 part per million in something. :0) Then I discovered red deer farm raised venison and it is really good.

Ok, dug the HAZMAT suits & respirators out last night and did some poly clay strawberries for my chunky danglies (not really, but I did sit 3 feet from the oven the whole time it baked cause now I'm kinda freaked out by this stuff & can't wait for the holiday to be over so I can toss it and start working on paper clay instead...)
Here they are! Will be postal asap. :)

I love those berries! Be careful, Oddy! We don't want you getting sick on us!! I scrapped the idea of the sculpey for a later day. If I happen upon a used toaster oven that can make it's home in my garage I will be happy, but if not- oh well just not meant to be.
My appetizer chunky is sitting under the books right now while I make a batch of those blue velvet cupcakes. Holey moley, do they take a lot of blue food coloring:radar:. I'm making them for my daughter's b-day, she's turning 15 so I thought that's an excuse and they seem appropriate for it. My goodness, where has the time gone???
Hope everyone is having a great holiday!

Cool! I love it. Do have a question though. It seems that everyone is putting some kind of dangliness on the edge of the page. Is that a requirement? I haven't exercised that part of my brain since I gave up making handmade glass beads and jewelry.
Charlie Brown
05-29-2012, 07:28 AM
Danglies are NOT a requirement. The level of chunkiness is open to the artist for this swap. Please do not feel the need to make these on your chunkies, but it's all your call.

05-30-2012, 07:06 PM
Sorry guys! I got side-tracked last night. Glad you found the ingredients in the gallery. I spent a considerable amount of time trying to figure out how I wanted to rename the recipe - the original name wasn't very fun and I needed something that would not take up a lot of space on my chunky. I did try them out and they are easy and tasty- loaded with fat! They actually taste better to me at room temp than warm/hot.
Okay, now I'm off to do Traders for real!!! Sorry, I like to keep my word and I didn't follow through last night.
Blanche
05-31-2012, 07:40 PM
Actually, Charlie Brown, your Oinkers would fit in a low carb diet with only 9 grams of carbs for 4 crackers (don'tcha just love the internet for random facts like that?). The only problem I would have would be limiting myself to just 4 :spinny:
Charlie Brown

Just a thought - maybe for this first round we can do a test of making a pdf of all the recipes to share with all the entrants...
Not the same as having the actual chunkies, but it may p o s s i b l y prevent a mosh pit of mud amidst all these delictable offerings.

Hmmm... I was thinking of turning the photos provided by each and enlarging if necessary and then converting to a pdf. Yes, a bit time consuming, but stuff Like that I do anyway OTJ, so why not do for you folks and see what happens.
I would be willing to try it, see what happens to provide the recipes to all in this first go- round. If it works, it works. Maybe think of it as a test for this first round.
Of course this would require photos of the backs with the recipes and not sure if everyone is willing to provide that.
Charlie Brown, this is simply your call... I do not mean to hijack your swap, but I will make the commitment to do this and help in any way I can because I adore your concept and will follow your lead. :notworthy:

This sounds like a wonderful idea, but this round of the swap closes out on the 30th of this month. Call me conservative and give me the raspberries:P... but I'm currently in the middle of a swap where the host has over committed and not followed through on their end of the bargain very well and while life happens, there's lot to learn from the situation. I don't want to jeopardize my hosting reputation before I get out of of the gate.:nah: I'm going to have to leave it up to everyone to touch base with each other on any recipes they are jonesing for. But---like Jules said, maybe post your images so that the ingredients and directions are available where possible.

I like the idea of just communicating with the person who created the recipe you love and getting a copy because the fun part ofall this could be lost by over extending things. Keep it simple. Just my 2 cents.
