You’re Invited to a Progressive Dinner Party!!
Part 2 - SOUPS & SALADS
I’ve always thought it would be so much fun to take part in a progressive dinner, but have never had the opportunity. If you aren’t familiar with what a progressive dinner party is feel free to surf the net and check it out. So, how about doing a virtual one? This will be different because there will be no worries about traveling from home to home (you know there‘s detours and road construction about everywhere!); keeping cold food cold, and hot food hot, and the bubbly…bubbly; no scrambling around like a chicken with your head cut off; and last but not least, no kitchen cleanup. We can virtually enjoy recipes for good eats and drinks in the form of a chunky recipe page.
This is part 2 of 3 rounds for this progressive dinner party, meaning there will be one last chunky swap round to follow in the near future. FEEL FREE TO POP IN AND PLAY EVEN IF YOU MISSED THE FIRST ROUND, YOU ARE NOT OBLIGATED TO PLAY IN ALL ROUNDS. I’d love to have you participate in all courses as the swaps progress, but you certainly don’t have to. Here's a sneak peak of where we've been and where we're going...
Part 1 - drinks & appetizers - completed
Part 2 - soups & salads - in progress
Part 3 - main entrees & desserts
For this swap course or round, you will create 2 chunky pages, one for a soup recipe and one for a salad recipe. I will also play as a participant in this swap, so please do not feel the need to create hostie gifts!! I’d rather you send two great pages than feel like you have to squeak a third one out :wideeyed:
Hey now!!! Don’t forget that this is a swap and part of the fun is in the mystery of what will be served. Please feel free to PM me with any concerns around this and I will do my best to accommodate -- within reason, of course. When swapping out, my goal will be to provide a nice variety of artwork and recipes to each player the best I can.
Shipping info:
When you are ready to ship your work, PM me for my mailing information.
Please send your chunky pages in a padded/bubble wrap envelope. Without being excessive, be sure to package them safe and secure so that each chunky page is individually protected and labeled with your real name, username, and location - each page in its own sealable sandwich bag works well.
US participants- In your package, please include loose postage or well concealed cash in the amount equivalent to what was required to send it.
International participants- In your package, please include $4 US dollars if you can. If you can’t, I understand and I will cover the cost.
I will do my best to recycle your envelopes when sending returns, so please include a large label or equivalent size cut piece of paper with your address information clearly typed or written out to be adhered onto your original envelope. Keep in mind that the little return address labels will not work for this.
Rules:
1. Your pages must be 4x4 inches square and sturdy (cereal box, heavy watercolor paper, chipboard#. Please nothing flimsy:nah::no:! We want to be able to cherish and use these without them falling apart or getting bent and such.
2. Medium is artist’s choice as long as it’s not sticky, is fixed properly, and is durable. Think hand drawn, hand painted, collage, and mixed media.
3. Your pages must be lovely on both sides. One side should contain mostly images #consider this the front) and the back side should contain recipe details along with your username and whatever else you feel is important or have space to include. Please also consider listing the recipe source if possible. It would be ideal to create pages for recipes that you have made yourself and know that they are tried and true great recipes!
4. If you use glue, glue with care! Use something that will keep your beauties in tact, spread to the edges and clean up the globs, and be patient enough to give them time to dry. Like icing on a cake, good craftsmanship is important and always makes the difference in your work - let’s face it, we all notice it and we all appreciate it!
5. Embellishments- Yes! But not required! Keep in mind - Without knowing what I will get back for returns, I cannot guarantee that if you send all chunked up pages you will receive all chunked up pages in return. If you use embellishments, please keep the left ½ inch margin of the front page free for bindery purposes and also consider the placement of your recipe details on the back as to not interfere with bindery as well.
6. Communication-
:unsure:You read all of this and have no idea what a chunky is and need more info- check this out: http://www.atcsforall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1294
:huh:You read all of this and are interested but still have questions- please feel free to pester me by way of PM.
:wideeyed:You signed up and now you need to drop out- no sweat, just let me know.
:policeman:Please allow enough time for your pages to make it to me by the deadline - late cards will be returned. Please ask if you have questions! To be fair and to meet everyone‘s expectations, pages sent that do not follow the guidelines will be returned.
Once you get your returns, remember to thank your fellow crafties and rock their socks with rep points. In addition, please leave me an I trader rating to confirm receipt of your returns as well as giving me much appreciated feedback - but take it easy on the noodle lashings!

Made some soup this weekend to try out a new recipe. I wish I had a "grandma's special" for this one, but I don't. Seems weird making soup when the weather is so hot but did it anyway. I also found myself an ice cream maker on clearance so I balanced things out by making some ice cream.
Do any of you have family members that simply won't share a recipe? We don't do that in our family, but just wondering about the rest of ya...

We all share....unless it's the secret moonshine recipe from great, great grandma Girdie Snurdlehopper.

My stepGrandmother made the most wonderful thing at Christmas, and my cousins and I confessed to each other that we'd eat the whole loaf in the car on the way home from her house. She called it "Christmas Spice Loaf w/ Plum Glaze". Several years in a row I'd tell her in a thank you note and in person that it was so delicious I'd love the recipe, but she would never give it to anyone. I think she thought if she gave the recipe away no one would have any reason to visit her. I just wanted something to remember her by and have tried searching for it online but nothing so far.

Yep, ME! My Mama's chicken & dressing. :)
Mom always made the best & no one will eat anybody else's, though Lord knows they've all tried to make it. I have Mom's recipe in her own handwriting. & though I've helped her make it many times over the years, it's still not going to be quite right this holiday season, but ima make it & ima be a brat and keep the recipe to myself for now. (what they don't realize? The secret ain't in the ingredients. It's in doin the whole God-Blessed thing from scratch.... Well, that & using abit too much Sage) ;)

Definitely! It sounds like something easy to make, but I learned a few years ago it really does take some skill if you are going homemade. I had my mom show me last time they were out to visit for Thanksgiving. Mine still never tastes as good as Mom's. You are a lucky gal!

ok Sherlock, some additional clu-age...
came from a Mormon kitchen, so no booze involved (still in?)...
it was in a loaf pan, so a little more dense than a cake - like banana or zucchini bread/pound cake, brownish color (as seen by night -like I said, this stuff never saw the light of day!)...
I honestly can't remember if there were nuts or not - it's been at least 20 years...
kind of a crunchy glaze on top, so I'm assuming powdered sugar and maybe plum jam?...
sorry, that's about it - thanks :~]

It has been a little quiet!:wideeyed: I too have been working on my other swap stuff! I'm focusing on getting my MONDO stuff wrapped up this week. I'm not sure why but with PATs it seems like I have developed a "one at a time" method - I have a hard time working on multiple pieces at a time with chunky swaps. Each chunky gets my complete TLC before I move to the next one, but when I'm working with inchies or moos I tend to work on them all together. Is that weird?
I have been trying out recipes here and there, though...got to find something yummy to share for the swap. For me, that's part of the fun and challenge. I did make a very simple and delicious salad this week with tomatoes, cukes, onion and vinigarette. Easy and great for this time of year - especially for those who have these goodies in their gardens. I'm not sure I want to use that one so I'm still on the search...
So what's everyone else been up to?

well I am back & checkin in from back to back trips to Florida... all this talk of food sure is making me hungry!
I had wanted to sort of stick with a Lowcountry/ Southern theme for my recipes, but my salad one is not necessarily either one (still in the planning stages for the card, but I know what recipe I will use- it is a hit at every potluck I take it to!)
Soup is my favorite thing to pack for lunch, I make all kinds of crazy soup out of leftovers, but thinking I will go with a traditional Southern recipe for that.
TL, I adore your style and the recipes sound so yummy!!

Question: I'm working on this and having a little bit of a difficult time fitting the recipe on. Is it OK to use a pocket to contain the full recipe?
Charlie Brown
08-11-2012, 09:58 PM
Hi Clementia! I think this is fine as long as the back/pocket is still creatively incorporated/decorated! Just be sure that it will not interfere with any binding that the receiver may choose to use.
TF Balding
08-11-2012, 10:03 PM
Ok, i gotta ask... How does everyone bind their chunkies? I only have a few& nothing coherent enough to try to make a book out of yet, but i'm working on it. Just wondering for future use.

I punch mine in top left and group on giant binder rings by theme and hang from a funky old wooden pant hanger I picked up somewhere. I'll take a pic and post tomorrow :)
Charlie Brown
08-12-2012, 10:32 AM
Yes, please post!
Grrrdjules, groovy quirky cauli-soup card!
TF - I think I'm going to punch mine twice on the left side and use the the giant binder rings. Maybe get some 4x4 canvas boards and decorate them for front and back covers - but I'm not sure they will fit after we get done. If I can, my cover is going have the theme of "everything but the kitchen sink cookbook". I think it will go well with all the chunky danglie bits and bobs.
I seen a bag of bright multicolored binder rings at my OfficeMax the other day - they were a little overpriced but they would be really cool.

If you like a light lunch on a Bistro terasse in France, you can order "le soup du jour"
It is never mentioned what kind of soup it is, you have to ask.But it always is
delicious.

Looks good, Holly! Jicama is nice and crunchy - I never thought to substitute it with an apple. I think it tastes like a slightly sweet raw potato. That dressing recipe has so many goodies in it, just has to be awesome!

Great recipes! I do't mind jicama, it's not an in-your-face veggie for sure. This summer I got intimate with kohlrabi which is a little denser than jicama when Terry decided to plant a shitload of it taste untasted just cos. Yeah :)

so i'm sittin here tonight, trying to decide what soup n salad i'd like to make chunkies for... and im realizing...my family doesnt measure ANYTHING. makin soup? just throw it all in the pot til it looks full enough... making salad? just throw ingredients out buffet style and everybody help themselves... and i'm trollin round all my fav sites looking for actual recipes that might resemble the types of soups/salads we like to eat & i'm gettin nuthin, lol... got a few ideas for new things to try though!
Charlie Brown
08-19-2012, 09:44 AM
TF - yep, know what you mean! I think with most (not all) soups and salads you can wing it a bit. Just like grrrdjules said with her salad recipe, she uses what she has on hand. I'm sure whatever you decide on will be fine - you can always test it out too - that gives you an excuse to make it and enjoy it.
Since the weather has taken a turn for cooler temps (aahhh relief) - I'm suddenly in the mood to cook, cook, cook, today. I'm fixing egg salad now to have for lunch later, will be making my soup recipe and working on the chunky for it (lunch for work this week), and making grandma's chicken cacciatore with mashed taters for dinner. I know...I'm a nut!

Our weather just cooled a little more today and it sure is nice.
I'm making enchiladas later with fresh chilis from Hatch, NM.

Two weeks gang! Off to go work on my salad chunky - now I'm hungry for it.
I decided this weekend that I need to start trying some of these recipes collected from this swap. This morning I bought ingredients to fix up TF's strawberry mimosa drink(virgin style). Can't wait to taste it.

09-02-2012, 06:27 PM
Well seems I've done it again - signed up for a boat-load of swaps when I gots tons going on! BUT I made commitment to this one, just put it on that ole back burner to stew for a while.
For the salad, I know just what I am going to do, but the with the soup, I am a little more torn-
would y'all rather have easy ingredients that mostly you would have on hand, or more specialized ingredients, that might not be as easy to get depending on where you live?
ie, crab, sherry???
Charlie Brown
09-03-2012, 09:33 AM
Blanche, I'm glad you're hanging in there with us!
As far as your soup recipe goes, either way - I'm sure it will be good. Pick the one that inspires you the most, or you feel is the tastiest. Easy to make and delicous to eat are always a great combo.;) I should let the others weigh in...

I haven't been online much recently, but had to come tell you all that I received delicious looking recipes from WildHolly and TLSexton0913! I can't wait to try them!

Update: I made TLSexton's chowder last night (I love it when a recipe calls for ingredients I have in my house). It was delicious.
I have to admit I kind of messed it up. I made a double batch, and when I finished it still didn't look like much soup. I thought I may have let too much water evaporate, so I added more water. You guessed it, I made it too watery. I had to add lots more spice to fix the flavor and to add cornstarch and use my immersion blender to thicken it up. I suppose the blender thing was a good idea (although not in the spirit of chowder) because my husband has a thing where he won't eat food that chunks of potato.
Anyway, if anyone else decides to try the recipe, do not add water. Your eyes are tricking you.

I'm glad that you are trying out your recipes already, Goodmorningstarshine! Feel free to join us in the final round if you can...
I'm going to be baking surprise goodies this weekend to send to my dad. He just had surgery this week and is doing well after a year long bout with severe colitis and crohn's combo. He has about whithered away to nothing but bones this past year and I want to send him a "get fat care package".
I'm planning to go ahead and archive the thread at the end of this weekend. It seems as though everyone should have received their cards by now.
Please do rock your fellow peeps so that they know where their hard work has found it's happy home.
