MONOCHROMATIC
Mixed Media Chunky Book Pages!
Round 2!

Example Pages, (L-R) top row: KarenM, ShoreArt, and Me!
bottom row: made by PurpleCat, Katxena, and Babbetto!
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2329/2398804622_3a397d886e.jpg

Each page you make should celebrate ONE color, hue, shade, etc.

Red, burgundy, scarlet, orange, rust, pumpkin, yellow, lemon, greens: kelly green, lime, olive, forest, blues: royal, navy, turquoise, sky, periwinkle, robin's egg, purples: lavendar, eggplant, violet, pinks: fuschia, pink, cotton candy, browns: tan, chocolate, muddy, black, white, grey, silver, ivory, gold, copper, etc. etc. etc

Variations of shades, including the addition of a bit of black or white, etc, is okay, as long as your page is primarily one color. The above examples are great, see them for inspiration.

Format:
-We will be creating 4x4" pieces of art.
-Please make sure they are quite sturdy. Use at least 2 layers of cardstock for your 'base'.
-Also, the reverse side of the page should have a bit of minimal decoration, and include the artist's title and info. No white/plain pages!
-Chunky book pages are constructed on layers of sturdy cardstock, matboard, illustration board, etc. They can be thick (like a kid's board book) and also called "chunky books" because of the amount of embellishments added to the pages, or for stuff hanging from them--fibers, beads, wire, charms, etc. Please avoid the use of fragile items (shells, pieces from plants, etc.) that may break in shipping. Please do not go 'overboard' with extra embellishments, leave a few danglies, but not the weight of the world on your page.

Media:
This swap is for MIXED media pieces. Include at least 3 different types of media (not all scrapbook paper or all drawing); mixed media incorporating various textures, papers, layers, glazes, ephemera, paints, fibers, stitching, fabric, hand drawing, glitter, buttons, metals, charms, inks, pigments, etc. Be creative!

Shipping costs:
-All participants must pay for their own return shipping.
-Based on previous chunky book swaps, these are the approximate costs for mailing them back to you:
--USA: $2.00 for 4 pages, $3 for 8 pages
--Canada: $3 for 4 pages, $4 for 8 pages
--Elsewheres: $4 for 4 pages, $5 for 8 pages

You are free to do any of the following to cover your shipping:
-US participants can send well-concealed cash, US stamps, or money via paypal.
-International participants can also send well concealed U.S. cash, or paypal.
-Note:*If you are using paypal, please add $0.50 cents extra for the paypal charges.

Participant information:
-Minimum itrader of +5 to participate.
-Once the swap is FULL, please try to fulfill your commitment. If you need to withdraw, please do so by March 15th.

Mailing:
Please send your pages in a bubble or other sturdy envelope. Send me an address label, and I will reuse your envelope to mail it back to you, when possible. Please write your name and user ID clearly on the back of each of your pages. Pages should individually be wrapped in a ziploc bag or waxed paper, to ensure they don't STICK together when shipped. Try to use something easily accessible or see-through, so that I can see them to trade them out!

Due Date: All chunky book pages will be due IN MY HANDS by April 1st, 2009.
International participants, should mail at least two weeks early to assure that they arrive on time!

Oh, stop it! We ALL have plenty of time. Breathe, ladies.

This is the time to get a little box or bag going of pretty colored things, so when you have time to sit and do it, you can easily have inspiration!

katilady
02-10-2009, 10:39 AM
I have 2 gallon baggies STUFFED with colored bits of paper (as well as 3 drawers of bigger pieces of paper!)! That part should be easy, it's finding colored embellies to go along with it that seems to be harder! Maybe I will hit the thrift stores for costume jewelry this weekend. That's what I did for most of my house chunkies! :D

Great minds think alike OY!

Sitting in church on Sunday, I looked down and saw something sparkly by my foot. I picked it up, and it was some kind of pink, sparkly organza fabric, cut sort of like a rose petal. Since no one around me was wearing anything pink, sparkly or organza, I stuck it in my purse, and when I got home, it went straight into a ziplock bag I have on my desk labeled "pink!" (I also have "green!" "blue!" and "tan" -- tan doesn't seem like it wants an exclamation point).

That's awesome, Kristie! I LOVE found objects in my art. Me and 5 girlfriends went to lunch last week, and, when we were done, they looked at me curiously when I wanted the paper doilies from under their soup bowls. They should know by now! Free art supplies are the best! I also picked up a washer off the ground at hubby's work today.

Welcome Hokeycokey!

My father's an electrician and when I go home to do my laundry, I always find washers and other tidbits in the washing machine so I keep them for my art!

Wendy, I LOVE your pink chunkie page! Very beautiful.

I`m working on a white and a brown one, the blue page is already finished (I`m going to put it in my gallery tonight) I think I will start with an orange chunkie tonight. It`s so much fun, I just can`t stop anymore. ;-D

By the way, OY I read you had a swap guide, could you sent it to me too, please? Thanks. :-)

Edit:
Just wanted to say, that the first page is now in my gallery. What do you all think of it?

AnitaM
02-15-2009, 06:59 AM
I've been having a play - here is what I came up with. The purple one isn't finished yet I wanted to ask if it is ok as the bottom of the verse is too long to fit onto the page (When I am an old woman I shall wear purple by Jenny Joseph)

This is probably for the best. I'm not sure how I'm going to pull off monocromatic, this swap is about 6 more down on my list. Thank you all for posting my inspiration!

arteeztmom

Amy, c'mon now! I don't think you are capable of making anything that "sucks!"
Please don't drop out!! There is still plenty of time.
I'm waiting for my last one to dry to upload. I am a little out of my element in this category so I tend to worry. If Amyfaerie thinks hers suck, wait 'til she sees mine!

goodmorningstarshine
02-21-2009, 06:09 PM
I'm sure you can do it, Amy. I'm having problems, too. I think my lack of inspiration is the lack of defined theme. If I picked something, such as "Fruit communication in the supermarkets of the world" I probably could whip up some monochromatic pages in no time. I am just not clever enough to say "topic: Fuschia. Go." :skeptical:

amyfaerie
02-21-2009, 06:47 PM
arteeztmom, you made me laugh! i painted some paper towels in purples and pinks, so i'm feeling a little better about it. maybe having some monochromatic bases will get me rolling.

ooooooooh, must make purple and green pages - OY, are you swapping colour for colour same as last time you glutton-for-punishment you?

annmic
02-21-2009, 10:06 PM
I bought a roll of brown duct tape yesterday. It's BEGGING to be in an all-brown chunkie. Brown's my favorite color to work with and yet it's being the most difficult in my head. I think I just need to DO SOMETHING and see where it takes me.

I have a few mono chunkies in my gallery. I'm going to try to post them here as well. Let me know what you think. They're different than other folks have done, but I hope they're good eough.

OriginalYouth
02-21-2009, 10:13 PM
Grrrrrd Jules, don't ask.
Just kidding. Honestly, that was a P A I N in the wazoo. So I specificially did NOT put that in the swap description. BUT, if you bribe me with something sparkley or chocolately or funny in your swap envie, AND write a big note that says 'I'd love to swap for PURPLE pages or anything with CATS' or something random, I will try to oblige. A bit. But don't count on it.

As for the rest of you, no whining. Stop it, cause NO ONE sucks. Remember we started this last time, and then I told you all to get your 'BIG GIRL PANTIES' on and deal with it! And then, several of you got to making pages with monochromatic undies on them. Whew, that was fun.

So, inspiration, themes....
purple people eaters
red riding hood
blue butterflies
how now brown cows?
green ice cream
killer tomatoes
silver seals balancing on sterling spheres
black monkeys arm wrestling
lovely lavendar lilacs
Wonder Woman incognito wearing Orange uniform
a whole box of red crayons (wouldn't that be wonderful?)
a giant plate full of chocolates!

Okay, if you aren't somewhat inspired from something on that list, I can't help you. :P

amyfaerie
02-21-2009, 10:16 PM
i love you, oy. :cute:

i'm gonna put on my big girl panties right now!

OriginalYouth
02-21-2009, 10:19 PM
I love you too Amy! :D

I mean, really, there are enough of us wack-a-doos in this swap you can make some funny and random art if that is the urge that strikes you. I'm sure that another member will do the same, and then you'll both end up with something to laugh at! If you want to make sweet, serious and/or lovely art instead, that is wonderful too! I usually try to swap 'type' for 'type' in that way....make a page with a lovely sentiment and a scripture on it, and I'm not going to give you one with frogs drinking tequila shots or something. I try to swap similar type themed/feeling art for each other.

Make a page with CATS with party hats, and I'll see if someone else did too to swap with yours. :)

Thanks Tanya.

Yes, honestly, I could make art all day, everyday. I'd like to try it sometime, but somehow my kids need caring for in the meantime, and that darn floor will NOT sweep itself! I dream of art, and draw doodles of it, and sketch designs for clothes to sew, and only make about 5% of the art that I plan or imagine. And that is spending an hour a day at least making art! It's how I'm wired; constantly thinking, creating, improving, dreaming, envisioning. It runs in the family (both sides of my parent's geneology), so it can't be avoided.

Thanks for that, it's actually quite a compliment!

Looking great guys! If you have one area that is off a bit in color, you can always give it a wash of paint with a better shade, wiping off some, etc. Curbsidetreasue does a lot of this in her art as well. I use watered down acrylics or watercolors. HTH!

Pages are all fun!

I like how you've done the white one - they are all nice but the white caught my eye.

hokeycokey
03-03-2009, 04:24 PM
I think the white one is my favourite too...because basically white is white, it's all about texture, so I used embossed paper, Snowtex, acrylic paint and irridescent glitter....then while I was rummaging to see what else I could use, I found a white watch face. I'm really pleased with how it turned out.

OriginalYouth
03-03-2009, 04:30 PM

I always get a bit envious when the hostess talks about art "rolling in" for these swaps...I have yet to attempt to host one. It seems like such work and stress to make sure everyone ends up happy. OY is a pro so she can do this in her sleep, while she works on 10 other projects simultaneously.;)

katilady
03-07-2009, 05:30 PM
Arteeztmom--I really like hosting A LOT! It's such a treat to hold all these masterpieces in your hands. Yes, it's work, but it's really not that bad. I am a fairly UNorganized person by nature, but I make it easy by finding a spot that I put all the envies/packages in, and I leave iTrader as they come in so I don't forget. Swapping out is FUN! I have had to keep my swaps small cause I am new to hosting, but I think I will keep it that way to keep swapping out more enjoyable. And there is the hosts forum that you get access to once you start hosting, and there is a lot of help and support there. Now, onto art!

I have 4 done, I am aiming for 9! Pink. Orange, Blue, and Aqua:

katilady

It's an Asian paper that is usually orange with a gold foil square in the center. Sometimes it's light tan/cream with a silver foil center. And sometimes it has unique designs on it!

oh wait a sec: i found them here:
http://www.dickblick.com/products/ogura-lace-papers/

it's called ogura lace papers. i never know what that paper was called until now cuz i always buy it locally.
poo. they charge a minimum if you read the fine print: "Minimum Order — If our price on a paper is $6.99 or less, a minimum order of 10 sheets of paper is required. Your selection may be assorted to meet this requirement. If our price is $7.00 or more, papers may be ordered per sheet."

heres another place: http://www.mulberrypaperandmore.com/japaneseoguralacepaper.aspx
looks a bit cheaper...they have different sizes.

again, if you dont want to deal with their absurd minimum order and/or high shipping rates, i can still buy you sheets locally and mail it to you but it'll be folded.

I need to do a quick count, but I think I'm nearly finished. I may have gotten carried away and done too many. If so, they'll just make my book even chunkier. :)

This might be slightly off topic, but what do you all typically do for a cover for these kinds of books? Do you make one or do you use one of the pages you got back? This will only be my second chunky swap and I'm still trying to figure it all out.

I got a few more finished this weekend. I really like the way these turned out. Let me know if you think the red isn't monochromatic enough. I really struggled because I tried tone on tone stamping and I don't think it showed enough. I"m going to add a small set of chopsticks to the pocket. OH!! and the fortunes are removable so you can pull one out and find your fortune.

On the silver, I made the corrugated metal myself. It's just metal tape stuck to a piece of paper then sanded, inked and sent through a crimper. Pretty easy.

I'm loving the fact that I can use so much texture and depth on chunky pages. I feel like it's more freeing than my first love.... ATC's.

LMK what you think and thanks for looking!!

I think I didn't send you postage, and I was going to send it by paypal...I think. Could you please send me your paypal address?

Wait, there's a PICKLE PAGE?!?!?!??!!!?!?! Why haven't I seen a pic? Did I miss it?

I have been working on mine, but taking forever. Hopefully I can bring them to you on Sunday, if we are still meeting on Sunday?? I have been working on really large things, so chunky pages seem tiny. To think that when I first did chunky pages they were so gigantic after doing ATCs for so long.

Electablue, isn't that true? I am currently hosting my 2nd atc swap. The whole reason I started hosting was so I could do chunky swaps, and I can hardly wait. Here's my idea for my first chunky swap: Super chunkies, or chunkies that are 6 by 6 instead of 4 by 4. I think it will make the books more proportional, since they always seem really thick compared to their length and width.
