Title New Year ATC Set-Blockprint
Description New Year is my favorite time of year. I grew up in Japan and miss the traditions I grew up with. My grandfather would get a large Daruma doll every year. The facial expression is one of determination. They are built round so that they automatically bounce back up after being knocked down. The eyes are left intentionally blank. After you buy the doll, you set a goal for the year and paint in the left eye. You work for the goal throughout the year and when the goal is achieved you paint in the right eye. At the end of the year you take the Daruma to temple and burn it. I like the spirit of perseverance that the Daruma represents. It reminds me that no matter the circumstance we always have to keep moving forward in a positive and productive way. It is also customary to send written New Year greetings to friends, family and acquaintances. This is my informal hand written New Year greetings to my friends. It is written in Katakana and says "Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu." Happy New Year
