Most of the old Festivals are agriculture based, which includes seasonal crops and farm animals and what is going on at that time of the year. For Lammas, this means planting, growing and harvest; breeding animals, and going to, or coming back from, pasture.

    In Finnish "Lammas" means "sheep".
In Northern Ireland they have an 'aul lammas' Horse Fair every year. It is a big event, and horses from all over the country are bought and sold.

This Swap celebrates harvest, in particular, the gathering of the first corn and the first wheat, of the year. This festival is also called "Loaf-Mass" Day or "Harvest Home" in Britain, or "Lughnasadh" in Ireland and Scotland, and is "the feast of first fruits".

Lammas is associated with the Greek Goddess Demeter, Goddess of agriculture and wheat; Goddess of the harvest and nourisher of the Earth.

This is the first of 3 Autumn Harvest Festivals. It is celebrated August 1st or August Eve in the Northern Hemisphere. Think of harvest fruits and vegetables that are mature this time of year, potatoes, carrots, parsnips, corn and grains, tomatoes, blueberries, raspberries, roses, flowering sage, purple coneflowers.

Lammas is associated with John Barleycorn - who in English folklore is a character who represents the crop of barley. Equally as important, he symbolizes the wonderful drinks which can be made from barley - and their effects. In the traditional folksong, the character of John Barleycorn endures all kinds of indignities, most of which correspond to the cyclic nature of planting, growing, harvesting, and then death."

On Lammas it is traditional to bake bread, or shaped cookies. Often loaves/cookies are made in the shape of the Sun God.

Although corn dolls are made at Imbolc, Lammas is the traditional time to make straw figures, called "corn dollies" and/or "wicker men". Corn dolly charms are made from the stalks and husks of the first grain that is harvested.

"Lammas leaves" or "Lammas growth" refers to a second crop of leaves produced in August by deciduous trees in temperate countries to replace those leaves lost to insect damage. These leaves often differ slightly in shape, texture and/or hairiness from the earlier leaves, and are said to contain magical properties. thus they are particularly good to use for special spells requiring lengthy use and/or long-lasting properties, or to place into a Shaman's Magick Pouch or "permanent" alterpiece.

Beekeepers encourage overproduction of honey within the hive so that the excess can be taken without
endangering the bees. Lammas is the beginning of Honey Harvest and collecting wild or domestic honeycomb. Honey Harvest continues through Mabon, sometimes into Samhain, depending on where one lives.
