One place stood out above the rest for an arty party:
Homewood Suites by Hilton @ Liberty Station

There are a few spaces open – PM me for registration information. Keep in mind that San Diego is an expensive place to visit. Plan on $100/per person/per night with 3 people sharing a suite (each having their own bed). This is a discounted group rate until January 19, 2016 that includes tax - after that date the price goes back up, but you may be able to get a discount with AAA, AARP, Hilton Honors, etc. Breakfast is included with the price of the room and in the past has been a great feature to not have to go out looking for it before you get your ART on.

Reg Fee = $100. Hotel = $300/$400. Transportation + Grub + Whatnot = $$$???

WHAT ARE WE DOING during ART Diego? Pretty much anything goes. No one is required to “do” anything once you show up – it’s your weekend and for most, it took a lot to get here, so of course do what ever makes you smile. For some, hanging out at the hotel with friends and supplies will do that, for others the lure of San Diego will have you outdoors exploring. Some ideas for the weekend are:

GIFTING and TRADING ART Bring things to trade, or not. A list of trading possibilities is below to inspire you before you get here. Many have made gifts to hand out to all in past gatherings. A suggestion would be to bring trades or gifts to the reception Thursday night to get things going. We liked the idea of the art piggy bank, where those that contributed to the pot were eligible to win the lot in a drawing at the end of the weekend, so there will be an ART Diego piñata version going on. And of course, you can make and trade things while you’re here – many challenge themselves to make art from items found during the weekend. Or just hang out and laugh. It’s all good!

WHITE ELEPHANT EXCHANGE Will be a little different from past exchanges. If you’re going to play, it needs to be completed before you get here as the exchange will take place Friday morning. Helene will be running things and rapa has designed a sugar skull template and the end result needs to be something other than cardstock – go with wood, metal, clay, paper mache, etc. – so thick, chunky, 3D, mixed-media that will support some bling-bling will ROCK!

TRAVEL JOURNALS Because there’s lots to sketch around the grounds of the hotel and the surrounding areas of Liberty Station and Point Loma, the focus before you get here is learning or expanding your know-how about Travel Journals. Mistiko and lindagiese have talent and experience in this area and will try to pour all of their knowledge into tutorial threads on AFA where you can put their advice into action. The idea is to have everything you need ready to take with you everywhere you go in San Diego, from walks, bike rides, lunch, sightseeing – you’ll end up with some new or better skills and a great collection of moments and memories from your get-away weekend. <><><>Travel Journal Eye Candy<><><>

LINOLEUM BLOCK PRINTS While you’re in the ART Room, there will be stations set up with tools and supplies to carve linoleum blocks and make prints from your carving. Tandy and jazzie will put their experiences in carving and printing into tutorial threads on AFA so you’ll have some familiarity with the process if you decide to try it. There will be demos to get you started and we’ll be nearby to help out – but you’ll be able to go at your own pace. Once your block is carved, you can make prints for trading with everyone else who’s joining in during the weekend.

ALTERED ITEMS There will be a few things to alter and raffle off at the end of the weekend.

GROUP PROJECT I hope everyone will want to join in on this! There will be blank jigsaw puzzles available for all in attendance. Do your thing to it over the weekend, turn it in before you leave, and you will be mailed a piece or two from everyone else’s puzzle who participated. When you assemble the puzzle at home, you will have a unique patchwork quilt of artwork from all your pals at ART Diego that you can frame and hang on your wall and get the warm fuzzies from every time you gaze upon it. The base of the puzzle is matte illustration board – so just about any medium will work - do whatever you want with Copics, paints, Microns, collage. I will have examples on site so you you’ll have a better idea of the end product will look like.

...ours will probably be 8” x 10” because that’s an easy size to manage, mail, and frame...
...you make something like this at ART Diego because this is your color, style, or thing...
...and after all are turned in, dismantled, then set free, you’ll end up with something like this, or maybe this, or maybe that!

MOST OF ALL You will have a blast whatever you choose to "DO" at ART Diego!
