Soooooooooooo (infinity) pretty! Your really ROCKED them!

I used a Golden varnish (that I wouldn't expect the average person to have), but I started with a simple gloss varnish spray that looked great from the beginning.

I've used both matte and gloss varnish, and I personally like the luster of the gloss. Though either would be just fine.

    Mel, your rocks are great!

I used a liquid liquitex varnish but it was slightly tacky for days...and then a spray coat of a Winsor Newton brand varnish.

I have the Rustoleum clear coat...I gotta spray with that first. I don't think the ink will stay put other wise. The varnishes that you are speaking of...I'll have to look into that...I've never used them. Thanks for the input and the kudos

I got krylon UV archival gloss. It seems to give a nice coat. It dries pretty quickly, too.

Oh....now to think of it...maybe I'm using Krylon? Not what your using though. I like the sound of that UV feature...hmmm...I think I need to go gloss shopping...always looking for an excuse! Ha ha!

Mel, Mod Podge has a brush on sealer for outdoor use.

Also, for those who haven't started painting their rocks yet, you may want to consider using Patio Paints that come in small craft paint bottles. It really weathers well.

I have some sealer that is like mod podge...is this type of sealer not typically made for outdoors? Does it have to say for out door use?

I expect that, even with outdoor-specific sealers, over time, the stones will show some wear. Of course, a little wear builds character IMHO. I think as long as there is some coating on them, then it can be up to the artist that receives the final art to add any additional coatings before they display them wherever their heart desires.

Zarfster! Your rocks have landed! There are some superbly naturally beautiful stones here, and I like the way you left parts of them "just as nature created them." Lovely blend of nature and art. Thanks for the Spirit Bear Rocklace! It is a treasure!
