    Number of Cards - 3 for 3

    Number of participants - unlimited

Media – Open, but no photography or chunky embellishments.

Colour Wheel, playing and learning; Open Media - Due 10 Jan 2018

I was tidying (just a little) and came across some little cross stitch hearts I had made when I was doing some colour study, so I decided to cut them up and make them into ATCs. That's done, but I thought it would be nice to do a series of swaps using the Colour Wheel. I won't stipulate colours just explain what the term means for those who need it. If you don’t have a colour wheel, there are lots you can print off free. Here is a link to just one.

    http://www.graphicjunkies.com/free-p...l-value-scale/

This first swap will use a Monochromatic colour scheme. Monochromatic colour schemes are derived from a single base colour and extended using its shades, tones and tints. Tints are achieved by adding white and shades and tones are achieved by adding grey or black. For this swap choose a primary (red, blue, yellow) or secondary (purple, green, orange) colour. You can use paint, pens, fabric, yarn, collage, whatever you like, but try and aim for a range of shades originating from your choice of base colour and only those. You may use black for outlining/drawing. Each card could feature a different base colour as long as the card is monochromatic. For this swap please do not use black as your base colour. That may feature in a later swap (Achromatic).

    The cards:

    - Each card must be ATC size, exactly 2.5" x 3.5" and on a sturdy base (cardstock, bristol, heavy watercolor paper, chipboard), and sent in its own plastic sleeve.

    - Send work into which you put time, imagination and care, and would be happy to receive! I will trade effort for effort so make them your best effort.

    - Each card must be original, no copies please.

    - Label all cards with at least your real name, AFA username, date, location and name of the swap. A host card is not required but will be a very treasured addition to my growing collection.

    Postage/Mailing:
When taping the cards together, just a little washi tape works great to keep them in place when mailing (don’t use ordinary masking tape – it’s a nightmare and ruins the plastic sleeves). Please post in this thread when you are sending your cards out. Some pictures of your efforts would be great inspiration for those still ‘lurking’.

US Players: please send a well concealed $1 in with your cards.
Other International Players: Please send $1 in your envelope if you have them. Failing that PM me for paypal details.
Include a large address label with your address neatly printed. I will provide envelopes.
Please PM me for my address when you are ready to send your cards.

Make sure you allow your cards enough mailing time to get to me, late cards will be returned to the artist, unswapped, at their expense. Lack of communication and lack of ATCs may result in Neutral iTrader. We all understand when life throws unexpected things at us, but please, please communicate.

Players - when you receive your cards for the swap, remember to leave an iTrader for the Host (me) and Rep Points for the people you received cards from – This is optional, but a nice way to say thank you. We all need a little encouragement.

Please write your username and Swap Name on the back of your envelopes.
I will leave iTrader for each player as I receive their cards.
We love eye candy, so do post photos of your cards to the thread for us all to admire.

    This is what started it.

I thought you might like to see the culprits that started all this off.

I will do some more examples over the next day or so.

Welcome Lurkers. I hope you decide to join. Plenty of time yet but Christmas will be upon us before we know it.

Great minds think alike. I was thinking of doing something similar. Since I spend much of my time teaching the color wheel to elementary students, I must join

This is a cool idea - lurking!

I do want to point out that true primaries are actually cyan, magenta, and yellow (not blue, red, yellow), and secondaries are red, green, blue (but a really purple-y blue). (I've attached an image of a colour wheel with these primaries.) The blue/red/yellow primaries are actually an artifact from when people couldn't make pigments for magenta and cyan, but they've stuck around because of tradition. But if you've ever wondered why you couldn't mix a good purple with blue/red/yellow, it's because you didn't have the right primaries! Also mixing magenta and yellow to get red is a wild experience the first time you do it, I really recommend it!

Anyway, that's not to say you need to change your swap or anything, I just think it's important that anyone who does colour mixing knows about this. A lot of art programs/tutorials/etc use the "2 blues, 2 reds, 2 yellows" set to approximate primaries, which...worked fine when we didn't have actual primaries, but now that we do, I don't think it's the best approach.

Source: I took a course at university just on colour (and it was my favourite course!). If there's anything you want to know about colour mixing, feel free to ask me

Welcome dithespy and xela7072. Glad you could join us.

Thanks for the info zillah, that must have been a very interesting course. We will stick to the old fashioned source for this swap as it is what most people know and love. I think I only learned about cyan, magenta and yellow from print cartridges, so not that long ago.

My colour knowledge was picked up from a course on embroidery (hence the little stitched hearts), and I have an amazing book called "Color Works" by Deb Menz. I love it because it has a great colour wheel and some handy little black cut outs so you can check out all sorts of colour schemes. I often use it when I want a little pop if something and I'm not sure what I don't aim to get too technical for this swap though, you will be glad to hear.

    Two examples

The red card was made just putting carmine red, black and white on my pallette. I don't normally use white with watercolours, it makes the paint opaque, I usually adjust my colour using water.

The flower is ultramarine blue with white and black.

Even if I wanted to do a collage, I think I would still do this colour swatch to make sure my reds weren't too orangey (is that even a word) or my blue straying toward blue green or cyan.

I have also attached a couple of pics that show the huge range of colours you can get using tints and tones of just one colour. Top section of the grid adds white, middle adds black, bottom adds grey.

Very fun. The date's far enough out for me, and I've been reviewing color theory this past month and will be for the next couple of months. Ann, I also work in textiles and had done some stitching and color theory.

Please add me to this swap!
