Love your idea of a top and bottom border to make the design a square. When I did a couple from security envie liners, I only thought of that idea AFTER they were all done (glued down).

CiCi, I have one that you did that way, and it’s beautiful. May I show it here? I agree that centered with borders will show even better. I’ve got my exacto knife at the ready and a stack of pattern books on the stairs. :-) Some patterns will look better without borders though. I’m thinking of the hexagon pattern we both fell for, or crazy, which has no square per se.

Sure, you can show it. It was my second one, the first was a Dresden Plate for betsyg. That was harder than I had thought. I agree about the crazy quilt blocks not needing the border, and I'm sure that will be one of my cards since I have been working on a real one for a couple of years now!

Yes, in progress! Slow going, as I do lots of other things in between. I'm doing all the squares first, then sewing it together. It has deep burgundy, rose pinks, medium and pale pinks, accented with black, taupe, and ivory. Includes lots of embroidery, lace appliqué, ribbons, and buttons. Satins, velvets, taffeta, etc!! This makes me want to work on it again....I will try to post a pic soon.

All kinds of decorative stitches at the seamlines (I have a book!) and image embroidery of lazy daisy bouquets, bird outlines, etc. inside the shapes.

I'm lurking for now. I've wanted to do more quilt inspired cards. I worked some in an APC Athon. I put the 'squares' on the diagonal and repeated them.

I started playing with one and envision a single border (a complex border). Let's see if it works out, it may default to 2 borders.

I thought about doing 'log cabin' but would want to do 4 squares on the space. I will give it a go and see how it develops.

You’re welcome to lurk Lorna, hello! The log cabin idea sounds lovely... and tiny! <3
I think there will be many patterns that won’t require borders, and that borders will be a good solution for standard 12” squares. Mostly we just want to stay in balance. :-). Hope you decide to jump in!

This pattern would benefit from borders

This is a lovely Grandmother’s Fan pattern CiCi created from envelope security liner. It’s beautiful and would be even more so raised and framed with top and bottom borders.

CiCi, thanks for letting me post this lovely card.

Thank-you! Borders was something I thought of too late. And I appreciate your doing the math for us regarding the size the borders should be!
