Index Card A Day (ICAD) Challenge

Hello, all! Daisy Yellow is preparing to host her annual Index Card A Day challenge over at her site, here.

For those not familiar with ICADs or her challenge, from 1 June to 31 July, she will post daily prompts each week (typically on Sundays.) They could be a word or a mood or a theme. You don't have to follow those prompts; it's just a way to get those creative juices flowing in little daily projects. If you feel like creating something else that day, then by all means, create! Why index cards? They are cheap, so there's a lot less pressure to create something 'perfect'. If something didn't turn out well, then it's not a big deal. The only rules she has is that they must be on an index card. You can draw, doodle, paint, collage...whatever is in your heart to do!

This thread is to share and discuss the ICAD challenges, successes, failures, helpful tips, fellowship...basically, whatever it is that we want to discuss.

For the purposes of this thread:

    1) Art on index cards are highly encouraged, but not 100% necessary (I ended up buying super flimsy cards, and I'm not sure I can get the sturdier kind in time for the challenge, so in the meantime, I'll be working on 3.5x5" cards.) Your cards can be lined, unlined, colored, white...whatever you have handy. Cut junk mail to a comfortable size and work on that, if you like!

    2) Share your ICADs or daily art! This is a no-judgement zone, so don't be afraid of 'failure'. There's no failures here...only opportunities to learn something new.

    3) Be encouraging to each other.

That's it! The point here is to have fun! SO LET'S GET READY TO HAVE FUN! YAY!!!

Whoo hoo! Tomorrow I plan to go out and try and find some thicker index cards that can handle my gesso, I want to pre-gesso some of them so I don't have to wait until they dry.

That sounds like an excellent plan. What gesso do you use?

I've got index cards as well. Every year I start, but have never finished all 60. Maybe this year? It will be more fun in a group, thanks for starting the thread Foxglove!

Oh, I know for sure that I won't be able to all 60! Haha. But I always tell myself that I should go and do last year's prompts...but never actually do it. My goal this time is to do at least 3 a week.

Pouringdiva, my favorite is the Art Basics Heavy Gesso. It's really creamy, it'll go on lighter or thicker, and its thick enough to use with a stencil. I also have the Liquitex gesso in white, black and clear. Those are a lot more liquidy, but the white and clear are kind of gritty, so I don't use those as much.

What are people's goals for this challenge? I want to try and do 3 a week, but my other goals are to experiment more with papers and paints AND to use more of my ephemera and fabrics. I have a ton, but never use them because I'm afraid of messing them up. But I want to at least use ephemera and/or fabrics on one card a week.

    Interesting project....I may try it.

Index cards are 'cheap', especially at $ stores....why not just glue two together. Thicker cards would be more expensive to begin with.

The ones I have are really thin...they warp and buckle at the mere thought of anything moist. I can use them if I want to stick with dry media like sketching, coloring with pencils, etc, but they are no good with anything that has moisture. I dunno...I may just stick with the cards I've already made. They aren't index cards, but they are something I already have on hand.

Iíve been trying to do a sketch a day for several meetings NYUís. I usually end up
With about 4/wk. this will be great encouragement to do one every day. Iíve been practicing drawing from observation. Julia Cameron, Artistís Way author, call it something like ďcapturing lifeís many small adventures.Ē

GALZART, a year ago I was gifted with a giant pad of mixed media paper, and I did cut it down to 3.5x5" cards. I wanted to make pieces of art in a larger format...I've don't some, and I plan to use them if I get bit by the Art bug during this challege.

I did find thicker 4x6 index cards, so yay. I'll be prepping then in the next few days. At least I can say that something is an actual ICAD!

The sketch a day is an awesome idea. Maybe that is what I'll use my thinner index cards for...i really do want to improve my drawing skills, and that won't happen if I don't practice!

Have you done the ICADs before? I keep *saying* I will, but then I don't. LOL. But I have index cards ready for when I don't know what I want to do, and my good cards ready for when I DO know what I want to do.

I did the ICAD challenge in 2016! So much fun, but it was a struggle some days. I did manage to complete all 61 cards - which was a huge accomplishment for me. Not sure if I will attempt the entire challenge again ... but I may join in now and then.

I posted all of the cards on my blog (if anyone is curious):

The main thing is to make art and have fun!

Glad to have found this three, I just got aware of this challenge a week ago or so and plan to join for the first time. I've seen photos by people joining the previous ICAD challenges on Instagram and so, but hadn't realized that this is a repeating summer challenge. I'm hoping this would inspire me to create more frequently again. Not sure if I am aspiring to do it every day, though, but the idea is tempting.

Amapola, for me, the point is to have fun with creating something. I like. There is no pressure - they arent going to get traded, so I don't have to worry if someone likes it. I don't have to show anyone what I did if I don't want to. I don't even have to follow the prompts if I want to create something. Very low pressure with the high of being creative with no purpose. ^_^
