Modern Witches

What do witches look like today ? What sorts of spells would modern witches do? Do witches and technology mix (can you do spells over the internet)? Let's bring that magical witchy goodness into the present and make some cards with modern witches!

You can interpret this however you want, but each card needs to have a witchy character that's recognizably "modern" - whether that shows up in how they're dressed, what they're doing, etc, is up to you! I'm counting anything from the last 50ish years as "modern" so you could do an 80s or 90s witch if you want to. Futuristic witches are great too!

"This kind of precision over that much distance hadn't been possible only a few years ago, but Google Street View was an absolute boon to the art and craft of creating long-distance portals" - The Magician King, Lev Grossman

Card Guidelines:

  • Each card needs to have a modern witch!
  • Cards must be entirely hand-drawn and/or hand-painted.
  • On the back of the card, add your card's title, your username, real name, swap name, date, and any other info you want to include (maybe a little bio of your witch?)
  • Make sure your cards are 2.5" x 3.5", and are made from sturdy paper.
  • Host cards are very appreciated but never necessary.

Mailing:

  1. Please PM me for my address when you're ready to mail your cards. I live in Canada, so give your cards plenty of time to arrive - most mail from the USA takes about business 5 days, but it occasionally takes longer. To be safe, it's best to send about 2 weeks before the deadline.
  2. Put each of your cards in a plastic sleeve and secure them inside the envelope, either by taping them together or taping them to a card/piece of paper.
  3. Tell me your username and which swap this is for - include a note or write on the back of the envelope.
  4. Include a large, clearly written address label with your address. (You can send an envelope if you prefer, but don't attach postage to it unless it's Canadian postage.)
  5. Include return postage.

Postage:

  • Canada: include a permanent domestic stamp.
  • USA: include a global forever stamp - the round one that looks like a moon or a succulent. (I can use these in other swaps.) Please don't send any other type of postage (eg domestic stamps or mitered postage). Paypal is also an option.
  • International: Paypal me $2.65 for postage using "family and friends" method. If Paypal isn't an option, PM me and we can figure out something else.
Confused about postage? Please PM me or post in the thread!

When you've finished your cards, post them to the thread to show them off! If you need some inspiration, just post for suggestions. I've added some modern witch art in a comment later as well - just scroll down!

Once you've receive your cards, remember to leave iTrader for the host (that's me!) and "You Rock"s for your swap partners.

Welcome to the swap zhouzhou! You have some time before things are due at least :D

Hope you can join us Suzi!

Hopefully we get more participants - anyone else interested?

Even if it's just us zhouzhou, I'm very happy to just trade cards with you! Love your art style!

Your style is quite unique and I'd love to trade with you!!! Can't wait to see your cards!!!

I do hope more people will join this swap! I'd love to see interpretations on this theme!

that's great, welcome to the swap hedgewitch (love your username)

Haha, well I've only done some sketches so far, but I'll try and upload one when I get home!

Ok, here's the sketch I've done! I think I'm going to do a succulent witch :)

I've also hunted down some inspiration of other modern witches! Sources included, some of the links are to stores with more modern witch art by the artist! (Sorry the images are so giant, idk how to make them smaller!)

Lurking. Let me see if I can get something going before committing, thanks.

Lurking...I have babies on the brain right now, so I’ve got this vision of a midwife witch in my head, but I’m not sure I can come up with enough other ideas to commit yet.

Hope you can both join us! A midwife witch sounds really cool - maybe you could do a series of different midwife witches...

Haha, I should have put that together! No worries, I'll add you to the list :)
