Sometimes, if I have a bigger or more specific image, the direction the card takes is a little more obvious. Four starters above, the finished versions are in the next post.
None of these are exactly the same, but they are all similar. This is my favourite option, I think (though I will also gladly work on cards which are identical or totally dissimilar). But in terms of making starters I quite like ones which aren't exactly the same, but are pretty close. With all of these cards above, you could do virtually the same thing if you wanted to, or something fairly different, and it wouldn't matter.

Finished versions of the cards from the previous post.
Quite honestly, anything goes. Though the more stuff that's on a background, the harder it is to think what to add.
Sometimes, though, you just have a really great image, so it's worth using, even if it's a little larger.

One thing that concerns me is that I don't have access to a color printer so I can't come up with multiple images that are the same. I also don't buy any prefab collage elements. Wondering how I'm going to make similar cards. Still in lurking mode as I learn more. Hope I'm not getting obnoxious with all of the questions!

And thanks, Kate for all of the great examples!

I don't have access to a color printer either, only black and white. I've been collecting all sorts of things that I can get multiples of...including maps, book pages, advertisements, travel flyers, postage stamps, even food packaging. I have printed off a few images and shaded/colored them in. You can also use washi tape and stamps and writing.

Good ideas, Melissa! And I suppose I could always HD/HP something. Gotta think outside the box!
It sounds like everyone works pretty independently here. Once you get the address list you sort of start operating behind the scenes unless you feel like surfacing and sharing. Interesting and kind of appealing to a hermit like me, lol.

My goodness we've been chatty recently! Must be the new thread.
Thought I'd show some more starters for whoever asked (and really, anyone new, newish or considering jumping in), so you can see the variety.
These five were all done by me - I've tried to get a variety here - the first set is made from reclaimed bits of my kids' artwork (following another theme, lol). The second, froma magazine page, with a piece of washi tape. The third is to make CastleQueen5 laugh - she sent me the three images because she didn't really like them/know how to use them. I put them on a background and sent them to a second player (not her), but the second player actually sent them back to her! The red set again, is an image on top of a bit of leftover art project from my daughter. And the final set is from a paper bag from a Mexican takeaway place. I like to keep mine pretty simple to give lots of space for interpretation. next post will show how these pieces came back to me!
OH NO NOT THE ODD MONKEY? OR CAMEL HEADS? those still give me nightmares. hahaha
But in all fairness they turned out great. AND I didnt have to finish them ;I could have passed them along, but I thought I certainly deserved them. After all, I did sent them to Katelnorth.

Thanks, ferretgirl. Actually, I'm looking forward to being able to use a variety of mediums, but I realized that paint would still be an option.

I do realize this is RANDOM, but I have 4 starter sets, all different that I would like to send to 4 different players.

Plumhill, you can also stamp an image and color it in, add postage stamps, Tim Holtz people, ribbon, etc. AND--you can email yourself color images, then print them in color at the library, perhaps...

I have received a couple of unique starters from Allegrea. I know what I want to add to the fish card, but I don't know where those pieces are, so it may take me a while to get to this. Still working out ideas for the soup card.

Thanks, BluSkyHare! Good ideas! My little library doesn't have a color printer, but I think I have plenty of options in my stash.
I actually have a nice color printer, but it got clogged (probably the cheap ink I bought) and I'm not feeling like figuring out how to get it fixed. I'm sure it would involve shipping it somewhere. Anyway, there are lots of other things I can use.
I have three sets done, but I may wait until I wrap up the Dec. PAT and get those cards sent in before taking the plunge.

Wait Wait. I have 4 SUNFLOWER starter sets. I missed an important word. The 4 starter sets have sunflowers.

My overactive brain came up with another question. How do you guys keep track of what you've sent out? Seems like you might just have to send them out and say, "Que cera cera!" Actually, that wouldn't bother me. Just play and forget about them until they unexpectedly show up again in my mailbox.
I'm overly anal about keeping records on swaps I'm doing, but you have a little less control here since you don't know who some of the other players are and there's no clear cut deadline for getting cards done.

Plum, You can keep track of who you send stuff to , but you cant really keep track of who they send stuff to.
