So, even if we are not proficient with the new technique, we should send the cards in. I'm worried I won't do well with the new technique I'd like to try.

    ksj - no judgement here!

I want this swap to be about trying new things for ourselves and learning about new products or techniques from our fellow swappers. I had a total flop experience last year with a crayola melting experiment. If you try a new technique and it's a total flop, post pics - you may be surprised. If you get encouragement from the group please send them in for the swap or practice again until you feel good about sending something in. Remember, we are often our own worst critics.

I am lurking, but wanted to comment on your last post. I took your instructions literally, and am returning to my childhood to try melting crayons! I wanted to get a little further along with the project before committing. I don't want to sign up for too many unfinished projects.

bluemorningglory - I've seen some fantastic melted crayola projects. That's why I wanted to try it. I think my flop was mainly based on the type of paper I was using and maybe because I was using some old super cheap crayons. The experiment was lots of fun - I mean who wouldn't love melting crayons and dripping wax all over! But there was a waxy outline that soaked in the paper that I just didn't like. Again, maybe I was my own worst critic.

For those of you thinking about trying melted crayons, don't do it! I grated generic crayons, and used a marker on real art canvas. I put down parchment paper, then canvas, then crayon shavings, another piece of parchment, and ironed it. What a mess! There are crayon shavings everywhere. I got the melted crayon off of my iron, but it may not come out of the ironing board cover. The generic crayons melted strangely. Maybe they had a non-wax filler in them? The ugly cards have already gone out in the trash. It is unusual for me to have a project fail this epic. I am not frustrated or discouraged, but I am moving on to the next swap challenge. Please do NOT sign me up for this swap!

I'm sorry that it turned out so bad. I hope your able to get the wax out. I used a heat gun to melt crayons and didn't even think about ironing them... I'm not even sure where my iron is at...

I may still try paint pouring again, but I just discovered another technique which I already tried, and it is more fun than challenging/stressful! It is foil embossing, with a very simple embossing method. So I am ready to sign up please.

Here are my first two cards. Embossed foil, from an online tutorial. Aluminum foil, yarn (underneath), painted with Sharpies. A pansy and a butterfly.

For my last two, I did alcohol inks. The poppy magically formed itself! I enhanced by painting black accents in the center, and slight highlights on the petals. "Autumn" has a stenciled leaf in the center, painted with acrylics, with the veining scratched out with a toothpick before paint was dry.
