Help! How to color black dresses?

Hi! I have a lot to learn... hoping someone can help me out with this specific problem! I am hoping to join the Little Black Dresses swap and have sketched out my ideas and am now trying to figure out how to color them. I first used marker, which I really liked, but the sketch was much bigger than an ATC would be and I didn't like how grey the dress was. Next I tried colored pencil but wasn't happy with the saturation and variation/shading.

So... any ideas how to color a little black dress? Marker or colored pencil? Both? Maybe a different colored base layer? Shading... help?

I'm hoping to attach my 2 sketches in the thread once I've figured out how to do that, hopefully that will help show what I can improve. Any advice or suggestions or any comments at al are appreciated! Thank you!!!

This is colored with colored pencil. Then I added marker cuz I wasn't happy with the saturation. Now I don't like the lack of shading/variation....

I think that they both look nice! Sometimes I color with gel pens, or even glitter pens, they can be easier to control.

They both look good but I personally like the marker. I don't understand the yellow undertones though. They're a little distracting.

Hi Juanita Vee! Without know exactly what markers you are using, your black marker doesn't appear to be a real black?
Maybe something in this video will help you out? It might be as simple as putting highlights in the right places.

    Hope that helps.
