Was very excited to hear some cicada buzz yesterday! Today we found a lot of shells, on trees and some that had fallen off.
    Back after a loooooooong break.

    Brood X

My cards went postal today. We had swarms of Brood X (17 year) Cicadas on our property. I created a mixed media collage with a picture I took in our back yard. The dominant colors on the Brood X cicadas are different than the regular annual ones we get and they are orange, black with yellow stripes on the body. In nature the bodies are glossy black with transparent wings and orange "embellishments." I pieced a paper Cicada by using two bug die cuts and cutting the parts to match that of a Cicada. Mine were then painted with a shimmery water-based ink so mine is more shimmery than glossy. The edges of the branches on our trees have dead leaves that are filled with babies that will drop to the ground, burrow deep and re-appear in 17 years. Their song was so loud that we couldn't hear anything else and if we were outside we had to yell at each other in order to be heard. We could even hear them inside the house with all of the windows closed. Brood X had been gone for a few weeks now and the normal sounds of summer are back. We can once again hear the birds singing with the quieter buzz of the annual Cicadas.

    Better late than never...

Mailed my cards, but forgot to post them. I DO like having a gallery that shows all the swaps I have been in. I tried using different media for each card.

    Alcohol ink on Yupo:

    Prismacolor pencil:

    Metallic watercolor:

Regular watercolor with wax resist and pigma micron detailing:
