The Yule Goat has been an important symbol in Scandinavia and is still one of the most important decorations around the house. It is often crafted from straw. The tradition dates from pagan beliefs where Thor, the god of thunder rode across the sky in a chariot drawn by two goats, Tanngnjostr and Tanngrisnir.

Candles have always been lit plentifully on Yule to welcome back the sun and the energy of the God. In ancient lore, it is said that the God is birthed by the Goddess on Yule, now growing up and gathering strength until he is finally strong enough to bring in the light and new growth of spring. It is said you should light every candle in your home and keep them burning all of the darkest day.

I love those candles, Jo! Specifically, I love how you did the greenery underneath, the strokes of green paint in one direction, then the ink drawn on in another direction. I have to keep going back to that card to look at that greenery - it fascinates me! Maybe I've had too much coffee this morning while waiting for the Macy's Parade to start.

One of the things I've enjoyed the most about this swap is learning different traditions and mythology for the Yule Season. I've heard of "the holly and the ivy," but I didn't know it went back to a story of the Holly King and the Ivy King, a story I didn't know before this swap.

Holly is sacred to Holle, the Germanic underworld goddess, and symbolizes everlasting life, goodwill and potent life energy. Its red berries represent feminine blood. Together, mistletoe and holly represent the Sacred Marriage at this time of year with the re-birth of the Sun/Son.

Jo, if I am allowed to join the swap, could you send me your adress, please. So I can get the cards out tomorrow morning. It's 35 km from my house to the post office and I have to be there tomorrow morning anyway. Thanks
