Being the sacred animal of Freyr, the Norse god of virility, peace, prosperity and fair weather, the boar has always had a strong association with Yule. Its sacrifice at the darkest time of the year was thought to help to ensure bountiful crops the following harvest. It is also possible that the boar represented the sun.

I didn't know that about the Yule Boar, Jo. I've seen lots of historical movies and tv where you see the big family dinner and someone is bringing in a boar's head with greenery all around it, but I didn't know the story behind it.

Here are the last three cards I made. I send out the cards yesterday.
For me, living in the north of sweden, near to the polar circle, one of the most important aspect of yule is the "midwinter". The rebirth of the sun, longer days and shorter nights.
I also like Cernunnos. He is the horned god. Also reborn in the darkest night of the year, the winter solstice, and then he marries the goddess of spring, Beltane. Would be a nice idea for a Beltane/Spring swap, wouldn't it?

Cardamom Moon -the cards are lovely. And thank you for the additional Yule lore, I like your idea of a Beltane/Spring swap. By the time Beltane arrives, I am sure that you will be ready for spring.

Yule Bells

Bells were often rung during the Winter Solstice to drive away demons that surfaced during the dark time of the year. They were rung in the morning as everyone began to wake to chase away the dark days and herald in the warmer, brighter days following the solstice.
