And I have a question: what kind of protective plastic do we use when we mail them? I know ATCs are sent in penny sleeves; is there something similar for larger work?

You definitely are not too late, fundygirl. Welcome to the swap! Some people use plastic like sandwich bags, some people use the clear plastic that like stickers come in; just something to protect your pieces of art work.
