Great postcards, I esp. love the donkey one. My husband and I went to Oatman, AZ to see the wild burros milling around town. You could buy cheap feed to feed them. They didn't really want you to feed them carrots, as that is like sugar/a candy bar. So they sold feed cheap. The babies had a note GLUED to their head that read. do not feed me I am still nursing. They were huge babies, and so cute. That was a fun trip, but Oatman is very remote and it was a long windy road trip.

thanks for sharing the story about the wild burros! I was wondering why they had a photo of a donkey on one of the touristy things. :-)

CQ thanks for sharing the wild burro story! Looks like COVID has not shut down the burro visiting. I need to go there now.

Several years ago we visited Assateague Island in Maryland. The island has wild horses that roam around. They walk along the beach with the people and wade out in the Ocean. Not knowing how easy it was to see them, as we were driving over the bridge onto the island we told the kids to be looking for wild horses! We saw one or two and were pleased. When we pulled into a parking spot at the beach we got out of the car and 2 horses walked right up to the car (we had a banana peel from lunch that we were taking to the trash). Haha - guess we didn't have to really be looking. I took this pic with my phone while we were swimming.

    It was a fantastical day!!

I live very close to Assateague island. It is where we spend our beach days. And every year, for our anniversary, my partner and I spend a few days camping there. I have literally woken up to a horse rump pressed against mine, each of us on our own side of the tent wall. It is a beautiful and magical place. Sadly, this year, my partner and I both took ill when we had scheduled our trip, and we were not able to go.

Wow, great stories everyone. I love burros, donkeys, mules, ponies, horses. I remember reading a children's novel about the Assateague ponies. What was it--Misty of Assateague? and how they swim across a channel every year? I had a photo picture book about it too. I was HORSE crazy as a youngster!

That is absolutely correct. The island is partly Virginia and partly in Maryland. In MD, the island is divided again - partly state park and partly national park. the horses there have full access to the island and go anywhere they like. In VA (still part of the National park) they also roam freely but are separated from the beach and hiking areas that humans use. Or more accurately, the humans are separated, lol. the horses in VA are owned by the Chincotesgue fire dept! (it’s the next island over, you have to go thru it to access the island one the Virginia end of Assateague. To manage the population, and to raise money, they swim the herd across the channel every summer. The horses (they call them ponies, but they are horses) get med checks and a number of foals are auctioned off. There’s also a carnival and a pony parade.

I’ve heard there are wild beach horses/ponies in (north?) Carolina as well.
