Passion for Postcards - Vacation Memorabilia De-stash Swap - Due October 10
Due Date: October 10, 2022
Number of Postcards: 3 for 3
Number of Participants: 10
Media: Mixed Media - Since these are postcards, please do not use embellishments, stick to flat collage.
Passion for Postcards - A Vacation Memorabilia Destash Swap
For this swap, I will be mailing an envelope of vacation items that I have collected over the last few decades of traveling. Each envelope contains:
- Old photos -I spent a month in California when I was 15 & took lots of random, repetitive photos
- Tourism magazine pictures - several sizes, includes landscapes, people, animals and birds
- Several types of maps (atlas, city or attraction, pictorial)
- An attraction flyer
Swap Details:
Use the stash items along with your own art supplies to create 3 postcards keeping with a travel / vacation theme.
Postcards should be 4 x 6 inches in size, securely made & sturdy. If you can easily bend or fold the postcard into a U, it is too thin.
Each postcard must have at least 2 of the stash items. Using it can mean cutting it, using either side, distressing it, etc. Please add other items from your own stash, as well. These are meant to be finished pieces of art, so please put in the time and create a focal point.
**One postcard must include part of a map with a vacation activity associated with it. The vacation activity and the actual location of the map don’t have to be geographically the same place**
**Please make your postcard 2-sided. The back does not need to be elaborate, decorate it like the written side of a postcard** You could make up a great adventure to share or describe the artwork side of your postcard. Maybe include your AFA information in place of the address and use a canceled stamp as a stamp.
Swap Requirements:
- Due to my tardiness with getting some envelopes out I won’t give any neutral ratings for not completing the swap. If you would please pm me so I know.
- Please list the items used on the back of the postcard or on a separate note.
- Include at least your name, your AFA user name, swap name and date on your postcard. Some users also give a title and their city & state.
- Postcards that do not follow the rules will be returned to you at your own expense. It is not fair to the other artists that follow the rules. So, please take the time to read over the requirements.
- When you sign up, let me know that you have read the requirements. Also, send me your address in a PM so I can send an envelope your way.
- To participate in swaps on AFA, it is never required to send a host card, or in this case a postcard. But if you choose to, it will be treasured!!
Mailing:
- Protect your postcard in some sort of protective plastic (like sandwich baggies).
- Please include a large label with your name and address clearly typed or written on it.
- Postage: I will cover the cost of the initial mailing of de-stash items to you.
- All artists must pay for their own return postage:
*US players - either $1 well concealed cash OR postage to cover 2 ounces
*International players - either $1 well concealed cash or 1 forever international stamp
-Artwork that arrives late, will be returned at your expense.
Please share your artwork in the thread. It is always fun and inspiring to see the work of others.
When you receive your returns, please leave itrader for me (if I did a good job as host) and rep points for the artists whom you receive work from.

I would like to sign up. I read the rules and understand that this is a no withdrawal swap.
I’ve visited to California a few times. Looking forward to seeing what’s in your stash. Did you take all those photos back in the day when it was expensive to get photos developed? When I was fifteen there was no such thing as digital.

Thanks for joining dnewton972, JavaZarf and somnia! Your envelopes all went out today.
Somnia- most of the stash is from Michigan, Arizona (my 2 vacations in 2021), Kansas and Missouri (local travel). The photos were back when photos had to be developed. It wasn't a big deal at the time because I had a good job and filling my gas tank was really my only expense. Back then I could fill the tank for less than $10.

I'm very interested--love creating postcards, but could you clarify what you mean by "One postcard must include part of a map with a vacation activity associated with it. The vacation activity and the actual location of the map don’t have to be geographically the same place"? Could you give an example of what you're thinking of?

I'd like to play - I understand that this is a no withdrawal swap. I will PM you with my mailing address. Thanks!

I sure can. I’m working on a couple examples and will try to get at least that one posted today!

I read the requirements. You did a good job of stating your expectations about this swap. I also like that your memorabilia is from MI and AZ, places I am familiar with.
I see you are covering the cost of your initial send, and that is very generous of you. ( I often can not afford that when I do swaps like this). Do you really think 3 postcards back to us would cost more than one forever stamp, or even one forever and the extra ounce? I guess it would depend on weight.
Also, I did see that players could write up swap info on the back of the postcard, as this is more of an art exchange vs a postcard that we might use in the future. (AS IF). But is that the idea?
Can I sign up even though, I had so many questions? Please.
You have my address on the CRRR list. I realize this is a no withdrawal swap.

I don't know exactly how much the 3 postcards back will be. I think they could be over 2 ounces. When I finish my 3 postcards I'll put them in an envelope and see how much they weigh. I'll post if it looks like a stamp and additional ounce will give good coverage for general differences in construction. Good question though. Stay tuned and I'll let everyone know.
I was thinking of this as an art exchange in the form of a postcard...like an APC only postcard. I can't imagine ever playing cards with my APC decks. So that was my approach to that.
If other players want to chime in regarding the back of the postcard. Would you prefer usable postcards or art postcards that aren't intended to be mailed. I'm willing to change it to a usable postcard if that's the preference.
Yes, CQ I have your address and I'll get your envelope in the mail.

I voted. I really dont care, and overall prefer to keep them as art, vs using them. Saving the precious art and maybe adding it to a journal.

I like your instructions to make it 2-sided, which would make it a piece of art to be kept. I have a postcard collection. Handmade are my favourites!
