This is the 5th Anniversary of Try Something New! Doing this swap over the new year helps me keep my creative brain young and dynamic. As adults, we don’t try new things or challenge ourselves as much as we did when we were children. Most of this is due to past failure, worry or insecurities. Kids are always trying different ways to figure things out, making new projects, developing new skills – there are no excuses and minimal limitations in their eyes.
This swap is centered on trying a new style, a new technique, or a new product. We work on the honor system, if you say it’s new to you, nobody will question. This is also a NO-JUDGMENT zone! Do not hesitate to try several new techniques, styles or products and post as many experiments as you would like. I love to see the creative, learning process at work. When you have 3 (or 6) pieces that you are satisfied with (you don’t have to love them) send them in for the swap and feel triumphant that you learned and grew your experiences. Your cards to not have to have the same new style, technique, product on them.

Some easy new techniques are shaving cream marbling, paint pouring, nail polish dip marbling, blending watercolors, watercolor with salt or alcohol, or crayola resist. Some new products I’ve tried recently are paint pouring, heavy body acrylic paints and acrylics with thickener. And I will admit, I still have the (not so) recently ‘inherited’ a set of gouache paint that I haven’t tried.

Other new techniques may be impasto (pulling and scraping to manipulate paint), splattering and dropping or body printing. Check out this article for some interesting ideas https://www.widewalls.ch/magazine/painting-techniques

All mediums and techniques are welcome. Send in your best work but don’t be your worst critic!
All cards need to be standard ATC size: 2.5” X 3.5” and sturdy. No shaped cards for this swap. Please don’t send flimsy cards that are just a sheet of paper. Back your ATC on heavy cardstock or paperboard (such as a cereal or tissue box). Cards need to be sent in a plastic sleeve for their protection.

I spent a lot of time poring over how-to art books and ordered 2 about painting abstracts. Then I went to work on a swap from a small ATC group. I had to make a torn paper landscape which I have never done. So now I have choices of something new to try. I'll try both things. I guess my real choice will be what to submit for here.

I'll definitely try something new with you! I'm not sure what technique I'll try, but I have a few on my list to try out. Thanks for the invitation!
I'm always up for one-on-one trades. Just private message me!

Welcome to RaineyDay, CastleQueen5, Allegrae, leydab, NancyL, chimerix, shoreart, dnewton972, CiCiCreates, Juju, Donnacr, catladybj and Mushu!! I am so happy that you've joined me in my experimenting.
Tafkabecky - feel free to lurk and enjoy the energy.
I finally broke out the gouache paints that I inherited when my son decided he didn't like them. After opening the box I discovered that he used all the black and almost all the white. However, I started painting the 24 inchies that I'm making for the mid-Nov PAT and I like them so far! They have more intense color than watercolors but otherwise move like watercolor. I'll update the group after doing some more detailed work with them.
For accountability sake, I'm hoping to try a dutch pour and paint pulling with a metal ball chain (like what dog tags are worn on). On YouTube, it makes beautiful lily-like flowers. I will post pics, regardless of how pleased I am with the pieces. I hope that you all will bring us along with you as you try new things!
