Swap Title: I know why the caged bird sings
Swap Due Date: February 1
Signup/withdraw date: January 20
Number of Cards: 3 for 3 OR 6 for 6
Number of participants: unlimited
For this swap, all art should incorporate a bird in a cage. Make three or six cards with your interpretation of caged bird . . . anything goes, really . . . realistic, hand-drawn art to vintage mixed-media collage.
Maya Angelou's poem about the caged bird is lovely inspiration, but the cards don't have to pull from the poem.
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.
But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings
with fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and is tune is heard
on the distant hill for the caged bird
sings of freedom
The free bird thinks of another breeze
an the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.
But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing
The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.
--Maya Angelou
Just keep in mind, you're going to receive a mix of styles in return, regardless of what you send in [for example, you may not receive all hand-painted cards in return, even if you send three hand-painted cards].
This is an OPEN MEDIA swap--as long as the work is original.
- All cards should be standard 3.5” x 2.5”
- All cards should be sent in plastic sleeves.
- Please put artist ID, real name, global location & swap name on backs of all ATCs.
- All cards must be different--no copies or prints.
- Please only send art that took time and care.
- No cards should be dependent on scrapbooking embellishments.
- Please include username and swap name on all envelopes sent in.
- International participants--I will pay for up to the 1st 6 people.
- US Participants--Please include a business-size SASE with stamps = to what it takes to ship your cards to me. Usually, this is 59 cents [62 cents if the envelope is rigid].
All cards are due in my hands by the due date. Late cards will be returned. Please mail early so they arrive on time. I always end up being too nice, and waiting for late cards--this time, I'm not doing it!
Please PM me as you prepare to send your cards, just so I know they're coming. you might want to send cards to my post office box--it's getting to be the rainy season here, and my home mailbox sometimes is soggy.
