I’ve been having fun making chunky pages with geometric, repetitive patterns similar to mandalas, made with postage stamps.
I’d love to put together a book of postage stamp “mandalas” and I hope there are other folks out there who would be interested in creating and collecting them.
I've posted my own pages below as samples, but yours DO NOT have to look exactly like mine. They can have more collage or hand-drawn/painted elements….and they can use different numbers of postage stamps, etc. Use your imagination!
Just make sure the pages display a harmonious pattern which contains some postage stamps and make sure they are nice and sturdy and well-glued. Then embellish them to your heart’s content.
What is a Chunky? It is a 4 X 4 artwork created on a sturdy base. The front can be any medium including collage, hand-drawn, fabric, painted, etc. Some sort of "chunk" is added: gems, dangling yarn, charms, beads, found objects or other. The back is made pretty or decorated lightly because chunkies are often displayed in books. It's always a good idea to leave the left hand side free for binding.
What is a Mandala? A mandala is a graphic and often symbolic pattern usually in the form of a circle bearing repeated images. It is also defined as any geometric design symbolic of the universe (often used in Hinduism and Buddhism as an aid to meditation). Mandalas for this swap must contain postage stamps.
I have put the due date for this swap fairly far out so there is time to collect some postage stamps to use in your art.
